1. Aza manao miaramila be nify ka tsy mandalo katsa-maina : Soldats avec de grosses dents, ce n’est pas pour rien qu’ils passent à côté d’un champ de maïs / Soldiers who have big teeth : it is not in vain that they miss a field of corn.

Se dit d’une personne qui n’est pas compliquée. Elle fait ce qu’il faut faire ou mange ce qu’on lui propose. / People who is not complicated. He does what needs to be done or eats what is offered to him.

2. Aza mihambom-po banga nify, ka tsy mitondra antsy mandeha : Ne faites pas comme l’édenté plein de suffisance, qui n’emporte pas de couteau en voyage. / Do not behave like a toothless person, who does not take a knife while traveling.

Il espérait trouver un couteau ; or il n’en trouve pas et il se repent, car il a faim et n’a pas de dents. Ce proverbe se dit pour pointer les imprévoyants. / He hoped to find a knife ; but he does not find any, and he repents because he is hungry and has no teeth. This proverb was said to be improvident.

3. Lany hena alohan’ ny olona ka ny nify no aolanolana : Celui qui a mangé sa viande avant les autres a honte et fait semblant de se curer les dents. / The one who ate his meat before the others, is ashamed and pretended to bite his teeth.

Se dit des gens ruinés pour avoir mal géré leurs affaires et qui s’en trouvent tout honteux / Said people ruined and ashamed.

4. Madiodio foana toa nifin’akoho : Propre sans qu’on y fasse attention, comme le bec du poulet. / Clean without paying attention, like the beak of the chicken.

Se dit des pauvres gens qui n’ont plus rien dans leur maison, mais aussi d’un endroit bien balayé et nettoyé. / Poor people who had nothing left in their house ; was also said of a place well swept and cleaned.

5. Voalavo manaiki-by ka ny tsy laitran’ ny nify no vazivazina : Un rat qui ronge du fer, pourquoi s’attaquer à plus fort que ses dents ? / Rat eating away at iron : why tackle stronger than his teeth ?

Se dit des présomptueux qui demandent l’impossible. / People who wanted the impossible.
